This is a beautiful painting. I read a discussion concerning this and similar Renaissance paintings depicting the Father holding the dead body of Jesus. The question was- are these paintings “Eucharistic”. Given the fact that the Eucharist is the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus- and in these paintings Jesus is apparently devoid of his soul. But can God ever be soul-less? It was interesting.
