The Heavenly and Earthly Trinities (“The Pedroso Murillo” ) by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617 – 1682)
Oil on canvas, painted about 1681-82
293 x 170 cm.
The National Gallery, London
Murillo started with the Gospel story of the Blessed Mary and Saint Joseph finding Jesus in the temple. With Christ, these the three figures form the ‘earthly’ trinity while a dove and the figure of God the Father join Jesus in forming the ‘heavenly’ Trinity.
According to Murillo’s biographer, Palomino (1724), the painting was executed for Marqués del Pedroso. The work dates from around 1681/2, when the artist was working on a Capuchin church in Cádiz in Southwestern Spain.
